Nigredo is the initial stage of the alchemical process, and no change may come about without it. In life, Nigredo may be classified as the stage during which we realize our need for change, and putting into motion those first few steps of stepping away from the familiar. Through this stage, known also as “Putrefaction”, we learn to move away from the familiar. Perhaps it no longer serves us and is keeping us tied to the present, a place that no longer serves us, or is potentially harming us. In the Nigredo stage, we enter the underworld, the unfamiliar and learn to let go. Often times, we go through this stage in order to move forward and “find ourselves”. In the alchemical laboratory, simmering the concoction until nothing but the prima materia remains is the goal. From there, both physically - and metaphorically - we may use the true essence as the building material from which to recreate.

This beautiful black quartz specimen with multiple terminations and a rugged appearance is representative of the raw stage of Nigredo, wherein all but the structure of who we are, has been stripped away. Bold structural lines and striations are visible on the surface of the specimen.
