Volcanic activity is a defining aspect of Iceland, yet the Icelanders have learned to adapt to the threat over the centuries. This was not always the case, and eruptions led to many deaths and large-scale destruction among early settlers, who had little to no warning. Despite modernization, Iceland is still very much the land of Fire & Ice, as the active volcanoes demonstrate to this day.
